Mai Tai
Tiki staple with rum and orgeat.
Ingredients
- 1 oz White Rum
- 1 oz Aged Rum
- 0.5 oz Triple Sec
- 0.5 oz Orgeat
- 1 oz Lime Juice
- 1 piece Mint Sprig
Method
- Shake the white rum, aged rum, triple sec, orgeat, and lime juice with crushed ice until chilled.
- Pour the drink and its shaking ice into a rocks glass and add more crushed ice to fill.
- Gently slap the mint sprig between your palms and use it as garnish.
Story
Victor 'Trader Vic' Bergeron said he made the first one in Oakland in 1944 for two friends from Tahiti, one of whom exclaimed 'Maita'i roa ae!', roughly 'out of this world, the best'. His rival Don the Beachcomber claimed an earlier version, and the two feuded over it for decades.
Tips
- A good orgeat and a split of aged rums separate it from a sugary resort drink.
