Ingredients: 45 ml Gin; 45 ml Sweet Vermouth; 1 tsp Maraschino Liqueur; 2 dash Orange Bitters

A stirred cocktail featuring Gin, Sweet Vermouth, Maraschino.

Ingredients

45 ml Gin
45 ml Sweet Vermouth
1 tsp Maraschino Liqueur
2 dash Orange Bitters

Method

Combine Gin, Sweet Vermouth, Maraschino Liqueur and Orange Bitters in a mixing glass with ice.
Stir until cold and diluted.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Optional garnish: lemon zest.

Story

Usually named as the Martini's grandparent. It appears in O.H. Byron's 1884 guide and the 1887 edition of Jerry Thomas's Bar-Tender's Guide, with Old Tom gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino and bitters. The California town of Martinez claims a gold-miner origin story, as does San Francisco's Occidental Hotel; neither is proven.
