Story
Havana's drink, made famous at La Bodeguita del Medio in the mid-20th century. Its likely ancestor is 'El Draque', a 16th-century mix of aguardiente, lime, mint and sugar named after Sir Francis Drake and taken as medicine. The modern version with rum and soda dates from the late 1800s.
Bartender notes
Use crushed or pebble ice for colder, brighter presentation.
Tips
- Slap the mint against your hand instead of shredding it; bruised leaves turn bitter.
