Cocktail recipe
Negroni
Bitter, boozy equal-parts classic.

Ingredients
- 1 oz Gin
- 1 oz Campari
- 1 oz Sweet Vermouth
- 1 piece Orange Peel
Method
- Stir the gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth with ice until cold.
- Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.
- Express the orange peel over the surface to release its oils, then use it as garnish.
Story
The most repeated origin story puts it in Florence around 1919, at Caffè Casoni, where Count Camillo Negroni asked bartender Fosco Scarselli to stiffen his usual Americano by swapping the soda for gin. An orange slice instead of the Americano's lemon marked the difference. Equal parts, stirred, it became the template for a whole family of bitter aperitivo drinks.
Bartender notes
Slightly reduce Campari for softer bitterness in low-ABV preferences.
Tips
- Express an orange peel over the glass; the oils matter as much as the ratio.
- One large clear cube keeps it from watering down while you drink.
